4. Service Catalogs

A Service Catalog is a list of services available to a group of customers.  In Kinetic Request, it is a container for a collection of Service Items and has some unique properties of its own.  In this chapter, you will learn how to create and modify a service catalog, and set its properties.

Creating Service Catalogs

A new service catalog is created by clicking on either the New or Clone button under the service catalog drop down.

All of the fields in bold need to be completed before you can save a new catalog.  Visible To Group, Management Group, Web Server URL, and Display Page are set with default values when a new catalog is completed.  Logout action lets you set a specific landing page when a customer logs out of a service item. Service Catalog is a unique name, and Catalog description is an internal description of the catalog and its purpose.



Attributes serve as a way to add extra information to a service catalog.  Using the configuration manager, you can add, modify or delete attributes.

Service Item Categories

The Service Items Categories tab at the bottom of the dialog is where you define different categories within the service catalog. Categories are used to define groups of service items on the web portal. Adding them here makes them available in the catalog.  Click the ‘Add’ or ‘Modify’ buttons below the Categories table to create or update categories.

NOTE: Categories are optional. They are used strictly for display purposes.

To access categories, go to the Service Item Categories tab on the Service Catalog Details dialog. Add, Modify and Delete buttons are available under the table Available Categories. 

Category and Status are the only required fields. Category is just a distinguishing name, and must be unique. The other fields are all optional, and can be used for either display or sorting purposes on your web portal. For example, Icon Name pulls an image from the Image Library service item for display, and Sort Order can be used to place categories on your web portal in a specific order.

You do not relate service items to categories from this dialog. That is done on the service item itself on the Settings tab.

Attach Service Item

This tab is only available via the modify button for a service catalog.  Once it is available, you can choose to either clone or move service items from other service catalogs to the current catalog.

Service items from all other service catalogs (that you have permission to see) are visible on this tab.


Web Portals

Web portals, also called launchers, are the entry point for your customers into Kinetic Request. They are a specific type of service item that is configured to display links to the other service items within your service catalog.

Here is an example of our sample ACME catalog:

This version lines the categories up in a column on the left side of the window. When you click on the category name it displays the service items available in the next column over, and then you can display more information about the service item in the central panel. Requests that are In Progress, Needing Approval, etc are listed in the far right panel.

This just one example of what a portal could look like. Because the design of the web portal changes so much from customer to customer, we do not have a standard. There are a couple of examples on our training enviroment for you to take a look at.
